The client initially wanted a stairs to combine two separate apartments into a duplex ground floor
residence. Next to an addition in the garden BaksvanWengerden Architecten proposed a radical
change in the structure of the building at ground floor level. By incorporating the structural elements
in fixed furniture pieces the living space around it has become generous and continuous.
f
The full height glass folding doors in the addition open towards the garden and create the impression
of a single continuous space. This is most effective in summer, when the open-air living room
merges with the outside deck and garden. The walls and roof of the addition are cladded with thick
recycled pvc. weatherboarding; sustainable, maintenance free and eco friendly.
f
Upstairs the space is divided in a working area and a bedroom by a central box, containing
the bathroom, washing room and storage. The continuous, spacial experience at this level is
emphasised by frameless glass sliding doors.
