NYC Sukkah

Sukkah City asked architects to reimagine the Sukkah, a temporary hut-like structure built in the

fall to commemorate the week-long Jewish festival of Sukkot.

This temporary Sukkah balances on the border between heaven and earth, between past and future.

BaksvanWengerden created a simple structure by using one single element, a repetitive timber

frame that functions as the structure and skin and at the same time creates the volume. The

rigorous repetition of these frames generates an expressive interaction between shadow and light.

The frames are a filter that provide the visitor with shelter from the surroundings and at the same

time emphasizes the contact with the sky above.

The metamorphosing volume is derived from the program; an entrance, a space for eating, sleeping

and conversation, and a window that provides a different view of the world. The volume presents

the Sukkah with a contemporary appearance and simultaneously generates a reproduction of the

changing times. Capturing movement through a series of still images like a stroboscopic photograph,

the Sukkah seeks to explain that it is not the times that are changing but the components that make

changes in time.

The metropolitan area of New York will provide all the organic building materials. The Sukkah shall

be constructed of timber found as waste and recycled building materials.

V House | Alkmaar

BaksvanWengerden Architecten is commissioned to design and realize a single-family house on a

self-build plot, part of a new housing developement, Nollen-Oost, located to the north east of Alkmaar.

The client requested a spacious house in which most of the programme is situated on the ground

floor. The relation to the surrounding garden was leading aswell. In addition to this the client wanted

a ’solid´ stone cladded house. The position and proportions of the plot result in a north south

orientation on ground floor level; the main direction on the upper level is east west. The orientation

on both levels was also derived from the different views and the privacy aspects. Futhermore the

municipal development plan and beauty commission specification prescribes clear regulations on

heights, roof shape and colouring. All this was taken in account when testing the various models for

the house.

A shed on a bungalow

The ground floor is organised around a free-standing box, containing the supporting hardware for

the spaces around it. The living area on the south opens to a more formal front yard; the kitchen has

a central position and the eating area is oriented to the more informal back yard. On the upper floor

the sleeping rooms level with the roofgarden on both the east and west side. This elevated landscape

generates a sense of grandeur and privacy.

As the building could be described as a shed on a bungalow BaksvanWengerden wants to

simulateously raise above this concept by cladding it completely in one material. The result can be

regarded as a new typology.

In the main shopping street of the town Oestgeest BaksvanWengerden Architecten is commissioned

to design a deli shop. The plot is located next to a side gable wall of a terrace house development.

Due to the limited plot size the only way to fit the programme is to stack it in 3 layers.

Build in different historical time periods, the location is surrounded by a large variaty of roof shapes.

These roof shapes were mostly derived from practical effectiveness and technical limitations as well

as from social and cultural reasons. All these arguments are still valid, except for the technical ones.

This allows us to use the roof shape more freely.

The municipal development plan and an easement of use attached to the plot prescribe clear and

absolute regulations. Combining these parameters BaksvanWengerden Architecten creates

a building, which diverges from the vertical and horizontal on all levels. Sloping planes to draw one

into the shop; to bring in natural light; to create more space on the upper levels and to continue

the existing roofline.

More people live in cities than in rural areas. To fulfill the demands and maintain the living qualities

the authorities will have to embrace the challenges of inner city development.

r

Part of that challenge is to incorporate programme for housing, commercial space, public services

and green facilities in often small areas. For city dwellers diversity, spacial and living qualities are

ingredients that make a city an appealing place to live, work and stay.

BaksvanWengerden Architecten, in collaboration with Hans van Eeden Architect and Burghstone

Projectrealisatie, present a redevelopment study for the Oostvest/Fietsznfabriek location at the east

side of the centre of Haarlem.

r

From a sustainable point of view and simultaneously convinced of the historical and cultural

significance of the former Fietsznfabriek building, BaksvanWengerden Architecten chose to transform

this building to the new anchor point of the location. The new mix of programme consists of care

housing for elderly people and a day care centre for children.

Collective courtyard housing has been a housing concept for many centuries in Haarlem.

By positioning 15 terrace houses around a lifted courtyard, space is generated for secluded private

parking at ground level. At the Oosvest the houses are placed on a commercial plinth; on the west

side the dwellings have a private garden accessible from a garden room. All houses have their main

entrance at the collective courtyard. The collective character is reinforced by the presence of a

communal room; a possible guest house or courtyard party location.

The new Fietsznfabriek combines diversity, spacial and living qualities in program, form and

in material. An appealing redevelopment in the city centre of Haarlem. Local and relevant.
